Read on to discover life at Melva McDonald Lodge in Rooty Hill, where a warm community, quality care and a true feeling of belonging await residents and their families.

“We’re all like one big family”

Melva McDonald Lodge is described by residents and their loved ones as being welcomed into a family. Denise still remembers the first visit with her husband when they were looking for a home for her mother-in-law. “She was so welcoming and friendly,” she recalls of the receptionist, “and then we sort of met people as we were wandering around having a look, and they were the same. So for us, that was a big plus.”

The sincere warmth was reassuring for Denise and her husband. She says “They [staff] are wonderful. Really, really wonderful. We know most of them, and the ones that mum deals with all the time, they [are like] your best friends. They really do such a wonderful job.”

Families of residents at Melva McDonald Lodge have peace of mind knowing their loved one is surrounded by both professional care and, equally as important, kindness. Denise shares how her mother-in-law often tells her how happy she is at Melva McDonald. She says, “Everyone is so good to me. They spoil me like I’m the Queen.” For the family, those words of praise are priceless.

Pauline, a daughter of one of the residents at the home, remembers the moment she first walked into Melva McDonald Lodge. Their warm welcome reassured her immediately, and she felt confident her mum would love it here.

Over time, that first impression proved right. Her mother, who was once withdrawn and low in spirits, became engaged in life again, taking part in activities and enjoying the company of others. Pauline says this change has brought peace of mind to her whole family: “It makes me happy. And when I’m at work or at home, I know she’s okay.” These days, her mum often tells her not to rush over because she has friends and staff around her. As Pauline puts it, “Like she says, it’s family. She loves it.”

Residents also often describe the same sense of belonging when they talk about life at the Melva McDonald Lodge. Tania shares, “It’s great. [The staff and I] get on like a house on fire. It’s so good. I’m so glad that I came here. I really am.” Another resident, Helen, adds, “They make us feel at home. They take care of us.”

Staff like Lifestyle Coordinator Ria, who’s been at Melva McDonald Lodge since it opened, feels that connection too, explaining that the culture is one where everyone works together.  For families, residents, and staff alike, Melva McDonald Lodge is a community where people are treated like family, and where that feeling of belonging gives comfort to everyone who walks through the doors.

As Tania sums up: “We’re all like one big family. That’s what we are here.”

An independent life (with support always close by)

One of the things residents appreciate about Melva McDonald Lodge is the balance between having freedom and knowing support is always nearby. Helen says she appreciates being able to manage much of her own routine while still having help when needed. “When I need them, they are there for me, but they do allow me to take care of the things I want to take care of.”

That flexibility is important for residents like Tania, who values the freedom to come and go as she pleases. “We’re free to do whatever we want. We can come and go whenever we want to,” she explains.

The staff actively foster this independence. Ria explains that residents are always encouraged to keep purpose in their days. This philosophy encourages residents to make small daily choices and to take ownership of activities they choose to participate in. This balance helps residents feel respected, capable, and supported to live life in a way that works for them.

Friendships and a community that make you feel loved

If there is one theme that comes through again and again, it’s the sense of community. Residents describe Melva McDonald Lodge as a place where friendships develop naturally, where people check in on each other, and like belonging to an extended family.

As Helen puts it, “It is a nice community. It’s a beautiful community. We are always there for one another. We are a family.”

Patricia also treasures the social life she has found at Melva McDonald Lodge: “I absolutely love spending time with friends… it’s good to get out and talk to friends and smile.”

Friendships at Melva McDonald Lodge offer not only companionship but also provide comfort, connection, and the feeling of being loved.

Activities that bring joy and purpose

Daily life at Melva McDonald Lodge gives residents plenty of things to look forward to each day. The “Walk and Talk” group is one of those much-loved parts of the day, when residents head outside together, breathe in the fresh air, and catch up on each other’s news.

Inside, there are plenty of ways to stay busy. Knitting is a favourite, with residents working on blankets, scarves, and beanies that are later donated to the Blind Society. As Ria explains, “It’s a great way for the residents to still feel like they’re doing something for the community.”

Happy hours, BBQs, and special meals add to the flow of the week, giving residents and families plenty of chances to come together and celebrate.

A place where residents feel safe, respected and at home

At the heart of Melva McDonald Lodge is the simple fact that residents feel at home. Patricia sums it up simply: “[It’s home]. Absolutely better than home because I don’t have to do the work. It’s all done for me and that’s lovely.” For her, after years of caring for her husband and managing a household, the relief of being supported is invaluable.

Tania, who chose to move to Melva McDonald Lodge, says it’s a decision she’s proud of. “I put myself here. Not my kids, not my family, not my husband, myself… I made that decision and here I am today. No regrets.” For her, Melva McDonald truly is home. “When I walk back in after being out with my family, I just say, take me home. This is home for me.”

Helen echoes the same feelings. “Melva McDonald Lodge is my home. I’m at home here. [I’m] looked after and I’m safe here.”
