All Saints Community Care at The Hope Centre

In partnership with Anglicare, All Saints Community Care provides material assistance through an Emergency Relief centre, open five days per week.

The centre will assist 2,500 men, women and children annually, through booked appointments with ASCC staff. Support includes rental assistance, food hampers, vouchers for energy and water bills, assistance in paying for medical prescriptions, fuel, groceries, recycled clothing and homewares. Trained volunteers provide crisis support, advocacy and referrals.

All Saints Community Care aims to achieve a sustainable outcome for people in need by fostering self-reliance and community engagement in clients. As its Facebook page says, “We believe that it is the church’s role to care for people who are struggling and are in poverty.”

Linda’s story

Recently, Linda came to ASCC for food.  She had borrowed money privately to cover the costs of moving house.  Over several months, however, despite her best efforts, she found herself unable to find the extra funds needed to pay back her loans from her disability support pension. Linda was interested in the Guided Shopping Project, which provided her not only with a week’s groceries, but also the recipes to use them and a costed shopping list so she could follow the same menu again.  In addition she was referred to financial counselling to help her get control of her budget while she discharged her debts.

Several weeks later we phoned Linda to see how she had gone with the Guided Shopping.  She was most enthusiastic, and had found the program helpful in a number of ways, including introducing her to the benefits of meal planning, and to some new easy and cheap recipes she hadn’t tried before.  Linda said she was keeping the shopping list and recipes as a useful tool she could use over and over.
